Starting to sweat

Final stretch... I'm getting really excited, nervous, anxious, and all that. Mostly excited. I'm still sick but I'm back at work which is a mixed bag. I have a better recovery chance at home but I'm well enough to be at work so. I will still attempt to take as good care of myself as possible and we'll see how far recovered I can get. I've been running too. Saturday I did a short easy 4 mile which felt pretty good. Then yesterday I did a 6 mile which will be my last "real" run. The rest of my runs will be light and easy until Sunday.

This week is all about routine. Constant hydration. Tons of rest. Good nutrition, nothing questionable on my stomach. Weird maybe, but one of my big fears for race day is that halfway through, my body will decide it's time to "have a moment"... it may seem kind of crass but it can be an issue for runners in a long race and well, I'm just hoping it won't be for me. It's all about training.

Today no run. I've been spending alot of time on the ING NYC Marathon website going over what to expect, procedures, tips, FAQs, and everything just getting psyched. The weather as of now is supposed to be cold in the 40s. Yikes. I am much happier in the cold than in warm weather but that's a little nippy. I have to rethink my running gear. I am a furnace and get warm very easily but over 4 hours, even I will need to probably cover up to some extent. Especially for the fist few miles. I wish they made an Incrdedible Hulk longsleeve dry wicking shirt that i could wear underneath a short sleeve so I could grab it with one hand and tear it off when I got warm leaving just my short sleeve shirt. That's my million dollar idea for today.

You're prepared, you're tapered - heck, you're finding out first hand what "taper madness" feels like. You'll run your own race, and you'll do fine. Routine is good. Sleep is good. Eating is fine - I recommend your last large meal be lunch the day before the marathon though, you don't want to run with a heavy load from a late dinner, no matter what carbo-parties are going on at the time (been there, done that). Drink plently. Other than that - remember, this is your first marathon. And your only first marathon. No matter what happens, agree that you'll have a great time!

I've run the NYC marathon 3 times and also have a tendency to get really overheated. I run around a 9:00 minute mile and found that unless it's in the teens, your favorite pair of trusty running shorts with a wick away shirt, hat and gloves is the best way to go. I've worn 'em when it was in the low 30's. Sure it's a bit chilly in the beginning but you'll warm up. It's all good. Have fun!

If you do decide to layer, make sure that you're not terribly attached to your outer layers. Either that, or that you're willing to run with them attached to you somehow for 20 miles.

As far as a removable shirt goes, Richard is right. You're probably not going to want to carry that layer for twenty miles. Since you're probably going to end up throwing the thing away anyway, you could always pull a Hulk Hogan and pre-cut a warm layer to tear away easily.
